ARTIST STATEMENT
Sculpting is a process in which I attempt to reveal through three dimensions, the essential movement within an object. - often an abstracted human or organic form. To me, movement is life and sculpture, like dance, captures that fundamental essence. But unlike dance which is ephemeral, sculpture lingers in our eyes, our heart and our imagination.
I work in both stone and clay. Although stone is static, I aim to capture what is within the stone - that intrigues me the most: - the shape of its flow, the line of its motion, the dance inside the stone. In clay, I work to build a structure that breathes, that expresses motion as well as emotion. In both stone and clay work there is a contradictory element that greatly intrigues me - namely, negative space. There is always that contradiction between what is actually there and the perception or space of what is not there
I also work two dimensionally with paper collage. Unlike stone and clay work, paper collage is light, delicate and fragile. In many ways, working in collage helps inform my work in sculpture. And vice versa. Both mediums demand a clear understanding of line, shape and form. In collage, scissors are a type of chisel, cutting through the paper to reveal the image. Negative space is again, hugely important in the perception of the image. IWhat is foreground, what is background, what creates the work as a whole. With paper collage, unlike with sculpture, color plays an all-important role,
